Literally, no one in the world is dumb enough to even try to take on our navy...the money could have been better spent.
And why is it that no one fricks with us?
Because we continually possess military capabilities beyond their current inventories.
You don't maintain that advantage by resting on your laurels.
National projection of power is much like economics. You begin to lose the moment your opponent becomes more innovative than you.

Assume away, but you know what they say about people who assume...
I didn't answer b/c someone with so little as a clue to why simply was more shocking..
Any peon with half a brain should be able to understand why a strong Navy is necessary as other did kindly point out.
Sorry for hurting you poor little feeling.. I'll take some more coddling classes and attempt to be more receptive in the future.

Sure, and back when we had a big bad enemy capable of trying to keep up with us, spending money on shite like this...worth it (think Soviets).
Whose that enemy now?
Iran? North Korea? China?
None of them can even think about taking on a single American battle group with their pathetic naval power.
So who was this 4-billion dollar ship built to fight? ISIS?
quote:
"On 31 July 2008, U.S. Navy acquisition officials told Congress that the service needed to purchase more Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, and no longer needs the next-generation DDG-1000 class,[20] Only the two approved destroyers would be built. The Navy said the world threat picture had changed in such a way that it now makes more sense to build at least eight more Burkes, rather than DDG-1000s."
Please.
quote:
"What had once been seen as the backbone of the Navy's future surface fleet with a planned production run of 32, has since been replaced by destroyer production reverting to the Arleigh Burke class after ordering three Zumwalts."
Seems like someone gets it.

HMS Daring... The Brits sure do build beautiful warships

He posted a LCS, not the Daring.

The tv series The Last Ship would have looked a lot different with that instead of the Nathan James...

That they do.
I can't wait to see their new flattop.

Russia and China are rising up to the challenge.
Russia is decades away but China is potent now.
Furthermore, The US Navy isn't solely designed to fight naval engagements. They are the fastest way we have to send forces in mass to deal with crises far from America bases.
This one destroyer could eliminate an ill-thought missile "attack" from North Korea

Wow.Never seen a ship designed like that with lines so straight.
Bet it cuts through the water nicely.

The Chinese navy remain a regional threat at best and always will be that.
Their inability to project power makes them very much not a threat to us.
They are on track to surpass us in naval size. But we both know quality beats quantity any day of the week.

Yes, they are called Carrier battle groups.

So can all those cheaper Arleigh Burke class destroyers.
Again, spending money on defense, absolutely necessary.
Spending it wisely moreso.
If the F-35 disaster taught the defense department anything...pouring money into an overpriced weapon's platform is not the way to defeat our "enemies"
Posted on 4/12/16 at 2:35 pm to Darth_Vader
The destroyer can't protect us from enemies within our borders, like the one sitting in the oval office.

Yesterday was our birthday. Why didn't you start a thread, fricking slacker?
This pic was taken from one of our carriers (Carl Vinson I think?) of the Philly going through the Suez in 2005. I was down below babysitting the Egyptian pilot. The CO himself told me to keep an eye on him... probably because he knew how much I hated their kind.

Sweet shot.

Still my favorite. Got to see Missouri fire her guns when we were enroute to the IO for a westpac. Damn cool thing to watch.
