CWIS is still very much in use and CVN-76 USS Ronald Reagan has them onboard. Guided missiles like Sea Sparrow and RAM have been around for decades. The rail gun and Laser are still in the testing phases. they are both onboard vessels, but they are not fully active in the service.

You're mixing up two SEPARATE activities
The destroyer absolutely did not need Obama's permission to defend themselves. Every military command has a specific set of "Rules of Engagement" that authorize defensive and offensive actions local unit commanders can take without higher approval. Defending yourself from a missile strike by launching countermeasures is part of those RoE's
The tomahawk strike launched by Nitze was in retaliation to the attack on our destroyer. This happened a short time after the attack occurred. Offensive strikes on sovereign countries DO need authorization from POTUS.

If we weren't over there, we wouldn't get shot at. Not sure why we help the Saudis against the Houthis. 15 of the 19 Sept 11 hijackers weren't Houthis, they were Saudi(no Iraqis either). Bin Laden was a Saudi. Best to just let them shoot each other and not get involved.
Plus Saudis are glutting the world oil market trying to destroy our O&G companies. Why are we helping them?

Right, but they still screw us over every chance they get. At some point we let them handle their own military issues. They can afford it. And we will always have Israel if we need an ally over there.
