Fatal amoeba found in white water channels

I was there yesterday in the early afternoon doing the ropes courses. The rafts were running full bore. I'm sure we will have all the alarmists out there coming out of the woodwork. I'm pretty sure this stuff is swimming all over Lake Norman.

It is in all lakes in the southern states. The warmer the water the more there is and the more invasive it is. But even then it is very rare.

If the amoeba was a bit larger, it's like a 1950's horror movie creature.

It is really unfortunate situation. USNWC is annoyingly over the top with their safety checks and I hope this doesn't affect them much. It was a freak occurrence.

Not really a freak occurance. Every incident qualifies as rare, but the article says it was found in nearly every sample taken. What's more rare is the girl's age (18). Children are at a greater risk because the amoeba has to penetrate the cribriform plate and migrate along the olfactory nerve to get to the brain. It's suspected that in children this is more easily accomplished. The amoeba has actually been recovered from the nasal passages of adults without ill effects. Chlorine treatment should work.

I'm sure it's killed in processing/filtration, but kind of scary that Meck county drinking water comes from Mt. Island Lake, which flows into the Catawba river/Lake Wiley not too far from the Whitewater Center.

Not that I would ever use a Nettie pot, but if I did, I'd avoid using tap water.

What is the setup? I'm assuming it's a man made course. Is water diverted onto the course from a nearby river? Or is it from a municipal water supply like most water parks?

It's a man made course close to the Catawba River, where they pump the water from, iirc. There are trails and zip lines in the woods between the course and the river. There is also paddle boarding and flat water kayaking on he river.

The Catawba river is dammed in several places, upstream is Mountain Island Lake, further upstream is Lake Norman, downstream is Lake Wylie.
