The other CAF thread reminded me about this one.. so I checked to see if there was a status update. Turns out there is:
Federal government giving back nearly all money seized from Parma Heights man at airport
Good for him, I hope he gets his legal fees paid too (assuming that’s a possibility). CBP seized his money in October and had not initiated proceedings or charged him with a crime as of May, when he filed his lawsuit. Then the story gets national attention in June and all of a sudden CBP is willing to give it back.

quote:
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection has agreed to give back nearly all the cash taken from a Parma Heights man who was traveling to Albania from Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport in 2017.
quote:
The minutes of the proceeding says that customs officials told the judge that "they were beginning the process of tendering a check to Petitioner Kazazi in the amount of $57,330 plus interest."
However, Kazazi and the government do not agree on how exactly how much agents seized. Kazazi claims the government took an additional $770; the government says it's giving back everything agents took.
As a result, Polster scheduled a bench trial for Dec. 10.

“Small government conservatives” ready to question why anyone “needs” that much cash on them.
Like why would you ever “need” an AR-15?

What does that make you for not even being able to properly capitalize (or spell) United States?

I find it disturbing that he was not given access to an interpreter. Even if an Albanian interpreter was not available, you could at least use an app translator to try to make sure everyone involved has at least a chance to understand the issue.
If you frick up, which I’m not saying he did, you should be able to at least understand what the frick you did wrong and how to go about solving it. Hell we do it for the parents of special education students because it is fricking important for everyone to be clear about rights and procedures. You shouldn’t be able to take someone’s possessions like that without them knowing exactly what the frick is going on.

Not necessarily. When I flew international we had to go in/out through different gates which required you to pick up baggage in the domestic side and re-enter, scan/check baggage and go through international screening prior to going on to international flight.
