The case got attention because it was initially covered up by the local DA(s).

That’s the lie you tell yourself because of your cognitive bias

How many innocent victims have failed to get justice because of the incompetence of the DA right here in New Orleans? Where is the outrage?

In fact, since Jason Williams took office, 701 releases have gone up almost 600 percent, according to data from the city council. And some of the crimes the people were accused of include murder, robbery and carjackings.

701 release means they didn’t file charges in time

You don’t have an answer. Just go back in your little bubble of lies. Keep telling yourself it’s about the DA.

This guy argued a few pages back that not allowing people to perform armed citizens arrests before a felony occurs promotes lawlessness.

It does. It's not even hypothetical. See: Los Angeles robbery epidemic. First you make it illegal for citizens to defend themselves against misdemeanors (and disarm them), then you install DAs who won't prosecute those same misdemeanors, then you get lawmakers who "decriminalize" those misdemeanors

Explain exactly how someone attempting to detain an individual they witnessed committing a non-felony on their property would be different from this scenario. If you can't perform a citizen's arrest for a non-felony, then you can't perform a citizen's arrest for a non-felony. The location doesn't change that fact. These sorts of rules make us ALL less safe.

I have no problem with a citizen holding anyone for a crime they witness.

So you have no problem with a citizen holding someone at gunpoint for littering. What about jaywalking ? I live in Savannah and people not waiting for the walk light downtown is an epidemic!! Should someone pull a gun and hold these miscreants until proper law enforcement can be called to the scene?

If you care that much about jaywalking, go for it. I doubt you're going to get very far with that though.

Police officers are just citizens too. Why do you think they should be able to hold people at gunpoint for the exact same laws that you believe other citizens should not?

Your problem here seems to be with crimes that probably shouldn't be crimes in the first place. To me, that is a different discussion. If we come to a consensus that these items constitute criminal activity and should become law, then I believe citizens should have a right to enforce those laws.

It's actually been the exact opposite. A crowd of people all spouting the same nonsense doesn't make them right.

ETA: To be fair, the situation in my linked article is far, far worse than what happened here.

You do realize that the "victim" assaulted the perps first while they were playing basketball? They were minding there on business, the white kid and his friends decided to start shooting paint ball guns at them. The victim initiated the whole incident

Are you drunk?

That was a huge part of this story from the beginning. The public at large had no idea this happened until one of the accomplices released the video after feeling guilty.

There was even a public fight between the police chief and the DA over this case.

You're a fricking hack dude.

Ummm it's all over the place. People on this board and the local nola media have highlighted williams' and his god awful term all the fricking time.

But you knew that already.

Maybe they can now charge him in Fulton County, and The Hague, separately, so he can get more life sentences.
