What could possibly go wrong?
EU and US will try to deflect asteroid

EU and US will try to deflect asteroid
quote:
The purpose of this two-spacecraft system is to deflect the orbit of one of the bodies that make up the binary asteroid Didymos, which orbits between Earth and Mars. While one spacecraft will collide with a binary Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA), the other will observe the impact and survey the crash site in order to gather as much data as possible about this method of asteroid defense. The target for this joint mission is Didymos, a near-Earth binary asteroid system that consists of a larger asteroid and an orbiting “moonlet”.It was selected as part of a careful decision process that sought a deflection target that could provide a maximum scientific return.

Ironically, I was at a wedding last weekend with an actual rocket scientist. He works for a private firm in San Francisco launching satellites. He is also involved in a non profit that works on concepts for how to divert dangerous asteroids.
My takeaways from our convo:
1) There is only a 5% chance that we will see any asteroid in time to do something about it. Space is HUGE.
2) Even if we do spot it in time, we don't really have sure fire way to deal with it yet.
3) We cannot nuke it ala Armageddon.
4) He thinks the best way (but he's only 10% confident it would work) would be to have a satellite fly around the asteroid at a high speed to create a slight gravitational pull that would divert the path enough to miss Earth.
He told me to drink more an enjoy life.

Bad advice.

Good advice.

That’s how it starts. Someone pushes a benign asteroid and the next thing you know Ashton Kutcher wakes up without arms and legs.

I am OK with this if it gets me a shot with Princess Ariel
