I've been having a dull ache on the left side of my chest for several months and the doc ordered a chest x-ray. They found a nodule and ordered a CT. I just received the results, and I have a 17mm primarily ground glass nodule in my lower left lung (very small solid portion). Have any of you been through this?

I'm not sure if I'm really asking anything, or just finding an outlet to talk about it. But to be honest, I'm pretty nervous. My mom passed away a couple months ago of cancer (it was too far along for them to know what the primary cancer was, but she did have lung cancer). My radiologist said they can't rule out malignancy, but if I'm low-risk she leans toward it being benign (I've never smoked but did grow up in a home where both parents smoked around us all the time). She recommended that I receive follow-up CTs every 3 months, and I have to see a pulmonary specialist next week for more tests.

If any of you OTers have experience with this, I'd love to hear your stories, good or bad.

How old are you?

Semisolid or ground glass nodules are common but can be adenocarcinoma.

Initially a 3 month followup CT then you stretch it out over a few years. Probably a 10% chance of malignancy.

Even if it is cancer you have caught it early and can get away with a lobectomy for cure.

No chemo or radiation needed

Have a nice drink and worry about other things like who LSUs next OC will be

I currently have multiple nodules at the base of both lungs, have follow-up ct scan 6 months from now. Have been dealing with since pnuemonia in May. 5 ct scans, the ground glass has clear mostly, but nodules remain.. Also was diagnosed with immune defiency since then. *Not aids*
Nodules can be old scar tissue, but you saying you're having pains I'm not sure. How old are you? Any other symptoms shortness of breath etc?

Pulmonologist will do blood work and pulmonary function test most likely

I'm 40 years old, and have always been healthy. I'm just being hyper-sensitive based on what happened with my mom recently. That's good to hear about the lobectomy possibility if it ends up being malignant. I haven't spoken personally with the radiologist yet (I was just sent the lab report upon request), but I like the 10% chance of malignancy much better than what I read. I know there's nothing I can do right now but do what the doctors say and worry about other things. And I'll have a nice pour of whiskey later.

Yeah, the dull pain is what I went in for. They really could be nothing though. No shortness of breath, no issues working out and running, either. I had a lot of blood work done, and for the first time ever I had some issues. I'm now pre-diabetic (barely with an A1C of 5.8), high cholesterol (now on Lipitor and baby aspirin), and low vitamin B (15 when normal is 30-45). It sucks getting to 40!

I have my pulmonary function test scheduled for Monday morning. Thanks for the reply!

Oh, I agree. I was reading peer-reviewed medical articles on it to try to get more of an "expert" opinion. But I also know that not all articles are good ones.

Yes, just 1 nodule.

Oftentimes, the ground glass nodule will be gone on the 3 month follow up CT. Many are of infectious origin (not cancerous).

Make sure you do the follow up CT.

Did you see a pulmonologist? If not, make an appointment with one.

Based on what you said, probably unlikely to be malignant. But not impossible. Make sure you stay on top of it. You definitely timely want to catch it as early as possible. Early stage lung cancer is quite treatable. The problem is it's usually diagnosed as stage 3 or 4.

Where are you located?

I had the same story as you, same symptoms, same diagnosis. I knew it wasn't cardiac related because it was reproducible. I was pretty sure it was costochondritis. They were 6 mm and 4 mm. Just had my one-year follow-up and they were stable. The two pulmonologist I talked to said they both have them and one said his were twice as large. He said mine was even too small to even biopsy, and that it was so subjective on the x-ray.

My chest pain has mostly gone away. I know it sounds crazy but I think I cured the pain will Mucinex. I noticed my chest pain suddenly went away after a cold. Mucinex is supposed to loosen secretions, and rib cartilage gets barely any circulation, so it takes a long time to heal. So there could be some logical correlation. At the same time I was using some tens pads, so that could've been it as well. A few weeks later the soreness started to come back, and a couple of days of Mucinex really seem to make a difference.

You may get a recommendation for "watchful waiting". That is, do nothing now and get follow up CTs to monitor status of the nodule. Or the pulmonologist may see something that makes him nervous and he may want to get a biopsy to rule out malignancy. Either way, don't freak out. No matter what this thing is or isn't, you have options.

My main concern right now is keeping my wife from freaking out. Her mom has stage 4 lung cancer right now. Even though I am hyper-sensitive, I have nothing on her. She wants me to push for a lung resection to get rid of it. I'm playing this one by ear though.
