Sure, look up your local state national guard recruiter. See what kind of options you have, and if they have any signing bonuses or if you can enlist as an E4 or get pay kickers. The recruiter is the only one that can give you accurate details. However, remember that it's a negotiation. They need you, not the other way around. He's trying to fill spots that are needed and will sell you on a slot that you will regret later like some stupid NBC bullshite or a truck driver. Do some research, find the MOS you want, negotiate your pay/rank/ship date.

No worries. Will do.
Keep in mind that there will be people in the military starting this year that were born in the year 2000.
Which branch are you considering?

Damn that's scary. I enlisted before they were born. Maybe Jodie knocked up their momma while I was gone.

I bounce between all of them it's hard to pin one down. Army SF or a pilot flying helos. Maybe a Navy Seabee, I could see Marine recon or scout snipe. AF seems to be the more cushy life, but I'd gravitate towards it because it's more technical.
And then as I learn more about specific MOS's in each branch I ponder those too.

you're going to have to take orders from people younger than you.
If I was 28 and had some meathead 23 year old telling me to scrub a toilet with my toothbrush - rather than knocking him out and get in trouble I would emotionally f with him with my old man wittiness.

I'm pretty sure you can still go to jump school or air assault school as a reservist or NG. Just saying you don't have to go full on active duty to get some of the cooler slots.

Can't speak for the other branches, but if you join the Marines, you're gonna get the shite hazed out of you by 20-23 year olds once you get to the fleet.

Damn. Me too. That's depressing.

I've always heard marines are a very different breed

I do have a degree, but not sure if I'd want to be an officer.
Coming from an E-3 in the USMC, what in the frick is wrong with you?!?!
I hate officers, all of em, but I'd be damned if I didn't admit that I would definitely go over to the dark side in a heartbeat if I could.

What if you joined the reserves, then mid contract I decide I won't to go full time. Do they allow that?

I'll give you one more job to consider looking into.
Becoming a Naval Aircrewman and flying around the world in one of these (P8). It's way too large for an aircraft carrier so you don't have to worry about ship life...EVER.

that's the pathway for most officers
Lol no it's not. Most officers come from Service schools and ROTC

yep, but you might have to run off some of that beer belly you grew back as a reservist.

This every day. Only way I could go in at that age is the O route but not sure anymore the age cutoff for getting a slot at OCS. Alot like the enlisted guys at OCS that actually outrank the DI's that have to take the shite. However that is temporary till they get their bars. Going enlisted you will be taking shite from guys way younger the whole time you are in.

I think it's allowed but I knew several reserve and NG guys that tried to do this after basic and none succeeded.

Especially if they've got an NJP under their belt. At that point in one's career you just stop giving a frick.
