Well since there are "several witnesses" more than 2 who have now come forward I would say the confrontation with a woman started the entire episode and this guy tried to calm things down and then get curbed stomped into Heaven.

Yeah, the gun theory is hurt by the fact that Ward neither called the cops himself nor (apparently) even mentioned it around the other witnesses that are presumably pulling out their cell phones to call the police.

They may have reason to believe that's false. They may have received that information after the initial battery and haven't been able to locate the victim of said battery.
