Foolishness and cheapness.... Probably.
I once triaged a guy who was cleaning and blasting (sand or bead?) the inside of a container with no protection. Whatever the frick was in that tank fricked him up. He was a Mexican guy who was chalk white. Whatever chemical (I knew then but can't recall) when inhaled binds to your red blood cells and do not allow them to carry oxygen. I had a hard time keeping a poker face and not sitting with my jaw agape while triaging him... It was a quick triage.

Making a jumper hose, change the ends out to serve your needs.
