The Rebs fell for the Fort Sumter bait. Should have let the Yanks continue supplying it. Once they fired on it, it gave the Yanks the excuse to invade and maintain the empire at the expense of thousands and thousands of deaths

Yankees were coming south either way, only question was the timing and what the pretext would be.
Zero chance the northern republicans were letting the south walk away despite that being what the founding fathers would’ve intended.

Grant's consolidated plan was working. He had maximum pressure on the Confederacy on three points....4 if you count Mobile. He was bleeding Lee in Virginia. Sigiel was mopping up the Shenandoah and was in a real position to make a move that would have cut Lee off to the west. You had Sherman moving out of S. Carolina and placing pressure on Johnston from the South. You had a Union army that was firing on all cylinders....plus the Union navy was active.
Where could Lee go? He couldn't retreat , he couldn't, escape and by the end of Petersburg , he couldn't fight
