Exactly. I've always maintained that the end of the cold war and break up of the Soviet bloc ruined the Olympics. This may be a step in the right direction....sort of

Back to the tanks...I wonder how many Ukrainians, even though they're Uke tanks, will see them as Russian surrogates. I think it was the 56 Olympics right after the Soviets rolled tanks into Hungary that the CCCP played Hungary in water polo. There was literally blood in the water.

I think if the protesters win against the government then that is just the start. After that they will fight amongst the 3 protesting factions. This could last for a very long time.

good points, but let me take a somewhat contrarian view...

how reliable do you think the Army would be in that situation?

I'm thinking that whoever is in control of the Army wonders if parts of the Army would be on the side of the protesters...

somewhat... if the protesters win, they will have elections immediately, that'll decide who is in charge.. which is all they want

You're right. I'm not used to anyone in that part of the country having peaceful elections. Hopefully they can pull it off.

They apparently announced early on that they were staying out of it. Though, there was some tank movement that people have questioned

I think that it'd be kind of hard to step in when the protesters are backed by the three major, legitimate opposition parties

I think Russia is going to be a major pain in the arse after the Olympics.

They already are a huge pain in the arse. Post olympics they'll have nothing left filtering them.

I have said it several times this thread but I am just waiting for them to go all Georgia on this and try to make up for some of the embarrassment of their Georgian incursion considering how unorganized they were.

Yeah I've already wondered that about the police and military. It was a key component to the collapse of the Soviet Union when major parts of the military backed the reformers/people. I'm sure there's some major behind the scenes maneuvering going on.

Agreed (even though you hate my guts). They don't need a new constitution, they just need to implement the one they've got and put competent people into leadership positions.

I'll explain the whole military/police thing in case you dont know..

They have three levels -

Police
Berkut
Military

The Police are like your normal popo, the berkut is a special govt. police force, and the military is the army.

The police are the ones on the front lines you see with the shields.. the berkut are behind them (they hold rank so they use the police to protect them). The military is staying out of it completely.

The tanks you saw belong to the berkut, not the military
