How come when you request a ride and it says your car is 8 minutes away, does it take 30 minutes to arrive? Not a rhetorical question. I’m really curious how this happens when my own GPS takes into account traffic, road closures,etc.. and pretty much nails my arrival time to the minute..is Uber intentionally deceiving customers or is something happening on the drivers’ end that they can accept a ride when they still have 15 mins left on their current ride?

You’re close, but it’s not Uber/Lyft’s fault. Basically every driver drives for both. They will accept a Lyft ride while in the middle of an Uber ride and vice versa. Very little the ride share companies can do about it beyond punishing them for a pickup taking too long, which they already do.

You can see where they are after they accept.. should be pretty easy to figure out why.

On uber at least.. haven't used lyft in a while.

It might be because the driver accepts the ride then looks at your 2.6 star rating and figures you never tip and may have projectile vomited at 2am in someone's Camry so they cancel the ride and you have to wait for someone else to accept the ride who doesn't speak English and just smoked a cigarette in the their Sentra before they picked you up.

This is the correct answer.

I have driven for three years, Here's my take:

1) Riders modifying the route or adding a stop
2) Rider needing assistance- walker/ wheelchair or other. I have had people who took fifteen minutes to exit the car and get safely to their destination
3) Request comes in mid-ride and Uber?Lyft is quoting the time from the end of the ride-in-progress
4) Some driver using the restroom or fueling-- I don't do that but i've heard.

Just because they are 8min away, doesn’t mean you are 8 min from getting in their ride.

It means they are 8 min from your location. And if they drive further from you they are 8 min and drive closer they are 7min

As minutes are a measure of time that is literally what it means.

If they wanted to give me a distance from me they would use miles.
