Jeepers. That is in chapter one of Carjacking For Dummies. No one falls for that one anymore. Also, never pick up a hitchhiker who has a pig on a leash.

How many times are people in a situation with someone like Dahmer, Gacy or Manson and there is that small, nagging uneasiness, but you don't want to be rude to the guy? The "family" that ran out of gas? The hitchhiker?
You did the right thing in being the good Samaritan. But you also listened to your instinct, which likely kept you alive.

Everybody has, or should have, a BS detector. It's that little voice inside your head telling you to listen to that little voice inside your head.

We all need to work on refining our BS detector.

You should always stop about thirty feet past them and then when they get within twenty feet of you. Quickly move up about fifteen feet and stop again. Fun to see how many times they will fall for it. If everyone did , the carjackers would stop doing this.

The BS detector is given, by instinct. Manners and kindness sometimes override that, which, in a perfect world, should. Unfortunately, those can get you killed. My mom has a scar of hitchhiker she picked up in the 70's. She just said he got violent. Never heard the whole story.

On interstates in some cities, you can assuage your guilt by calling 911 and asking them to send the motorist assistance patrol (MAP) to help them. Note the mile marker nearest the breakdown.

MAP used to have their own dispatcher number here, but a driver told me that now you should call 911.

In many states, including Georgia and Florida, if you see some one broke down on the interstate, dial 511 to request roadside assistance.

In Georgia, they have roving trucks that will change tires and provide small amounts of gas to stranded motorists. Not sure if AL, MS, or LA have joined in this program yet.

I had a blowout on I-85 in Georgia and the spare was flat. I called my insurance and they dispatched someone to help, but a 511 truck happened by before the insurance guy showed up. He changed the tire, filled it with air and even jumped me off because I had run down the battery trying to make cell calls in a dead zone. It's all free to the motorist.

Take a second and think about it. I'm explaining this to a 16 year old kid who has been trained to handle a gun, how to beat an aggressor to submission physically, and how to drive defensively to avoid aggressors on the road. I had none of these concerns at that age - that's the paradigm that we've all witnessed.
The world of your 16-year-old-youth was almost certainly more dangerous and violent than present day.
