Any of yall ever been?

I'm looking for somewhere to take a long weekend trip possibly over Mardi Gras, and I've wanted to go check out some New England fishing towns for awhile. I came across Block Island online and it looks pretty sweet. The only thing I'm thinking is it might be brutally cold.

Any other ideas for a good 4-5 day trip?

That sounds like a long time to swim with sea turtles. I'd probably be good after a few hours

The resorts are all-inclusive. Wife and I spent a week there a year or two back and never got bored. Was one of the most beautiful places we have been.

That looks pretty sweet. I saw it's close to Cancun though. Is it really touristy?

It's 100km away from Cancun. We found it is relatively "uncorrupted". It was quiet, and pristine. Akumal is pretty well "in the sticks" compared to Playa del Carmen or Cancun. Close to Tulum.

Block island is nice, but as others have stated, not during February. Half the island shuts down in the winter, anyway.

We take day trips out there in the summertime to rent bikes and hit a beaches. I can't imagine someone traveling from NOLA and making a vacation out of it though. Imagine you'll be very disappointed.

As a day or 2 one-off in a larger New England vacation? Sure... But not a stand alone destination and def. not in the winter.

I have only seen Block Island, never been there. You can see the island from Montauk, at the end of Long Island in NY. It looks really cool, and I have always wanted to go.

Everything there is going to be shut down. It'll probably just be locals huddled around the fireplace when you go. I wouldn't predict any activities.

Honestly if you've never been I would look into going in the early spring if nothing else- April would be good. Otherwise you're going to see all the stuff to do when you get there and it'll all be closed up for the winter.

Eta- you'd do better by going to Boston, then the White Mountains if New Hampshire. They are the only mountains east of the Rockies to have a treeline. They have skiing/snow mobiling/dog sledding/snow shoeing, etc. Much better than going to a windy/cold closed island.

Haven't been on Block Island but been close to it. The first offshore wind farm is being installed off the coast of it. I had work involved with it. Went in early September and may go back in April. Most things will be shut down for the winter from what I was told.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I've wanted to check out some of the fishing towns on the NE coast for awhile now. I was thinking about maybe doing Boston + a couple of smaller towns in a week, or just taking a long weekend and going to a couple of the smaller towns.

I'd like to go up there in the fall. I've never really been anywhere where they have real fall colors and whatnot.

They're gonna get up to a foot of snow this weekend. Hurry up and you'll get a front row seat!
