Rec ball is NOT enjoyable for any kid that is halfway decent and wants to play high school ball, etc….

As someone both heavily involved in Little League and select baseball, I’m going to make my little pitch for rec ball. The talent disparity doesn’t become massive until around 11/12u. Rec ball guarantees valuable pitching reps that your kid might not get on his select team, and it also offer the opportunity to learn a new position like catcher at a later age. USA bats don’t lie. USSSA bats lie and hide hitting flaws that will be uncovered when the kids move to BBCOR in high school. The pitching might be slower, but the mound is closer often making it harder to hit. Finally, those rec kids play with a joy you just don’t see as often in select. Talking trashing about last night’s game in the hallways at school is the sort of thing that keeps a kid loving the game. If you can afford it, do both. Guard his arm, but do both.

Unless you are in some legit travel ball league, travel ball is the new rec ball. Each team has 3 superstars and the rest are decent players.

This is obvious if you played Little League or Dixie in the 80s and 90s. It’s a shame what money has done to youth sports.

I agree man. And I think it has to do with local league. I know ascension and some other places have good programs… where I come from they don’t.

What you described is a perfect scenario… good programs with decent players- maybe not the “best”, but kids that aren’t “chasing butterflies “ in right field…

But those type of kids are mostly all playing aa ball… leaving rec with kids with no skill. And I think that’s a great option for them… if they are having fun and enjoying themselves, that’s all that matters.

BUT - when you mix these types with “capable” kids, it makes it not fun for either ….

I keep waiting for parents to catch on and for all of those AA kids to save their money and move back to rec. You could use the money you save on individualized coaching where needed. Someone is going to come in and offer an option that sits between select and rec ball and make a ton of money. The parents want it.

I’ve thought about it…. But don’t seem how it’s possible unless you have your own fields…

99% of the fields here already have contracts with the big guys… perfect game, 2D, OTC, USSSA…

Rec ball isn’t going to the world series in Gulf Shores baw. It’s all about the optics and what you present on social media. Nobody has to know that their team never plays a second game on sunday.

Around here the Little Leagues either own or have priority scheduling for city owned fields. It would probably have to run through them. LL International is somewhat trying to fill that gap, but they have to wake up and move to open bases sooner. Probably also have to facilitate some form of paid coaching for the kids who want it. This is a baby step. LINK

I genuinely do believe that there will be a course correction. The vast majority of select parents don’t want the time or expense involved. There are so many snake oil salesmen. There are good coaches out there, but it really can be a slimy industry.

Occasionally at our Little League games, people sneak booze in their cups … That’s all I’ve got.
