From my experiences, country people from the sticks aren’t as racist as people make them out to be.
In my day, they had a lot in common with black folks.

I grew up in rural north Louisiana as a Southern Baptist. When I said I was going to LSU, my mother cried for days and had all her prayer group ladies praying that God would save me from the heathen Cajuns and Catholics. The only Catholic I had ever encountered was a friend’s dad who was from New Orleans and although he was going to the Methodist church with the family, he was known to “drink beer even in public” and made the sign of the cross before shooting free throws and often cursed during games in the church league. We didn’t get out of school for Mardi Gras, so that was new. So, yeah, I learned a lot during my first year.

The biggest shock I've seen to my friends from out of state is that I can usually whip up some good cajun food by what they already have in their kitchen.
New York jew in college learned to make one hell of an étoufée while he was down here. Anytime we talk he tells me his family says he still has a south louisiana accent

I was in NYC for my 21st BD and stopped by a Burger King to get a drink while out walking. A guy approached me and asked where was I from, before I knew it I was surrounded by people wanting to hear me talk.

Cajun accent? I don't really think I have much of an accent outside of some southern words like y'all etc. I grew up in the BR burbs.

You're probably pretty clean, but BR is an accent all its own.
Education usually diminishes accents. Liquor bring them back

I didn’t think I did either, especially after graduation. It was really odd.

I’m in the same boat. I really don’t think I have an accent, but people usually ask me where I’m from within minutes of meeting me.

My wife is from a small town in central Alabama. Hers really comes out after a few glasses of wine when she's on the phone with one of her relatives.

I'm from a small town in Texas, but biggest culture shock for me was being able to buy liquor in wal-mart, convenient stores, etc. and the amount of rain

saying the N-word doesn't make you racist. it's a cultural thing.

If white, go to NBR and spread the culture and see how that works for you.

The biggest/regularly reoccurring culture shock leaving South LA is how few people smoke.
