after considering all the options mentioned
I have to go with VETTE guy
the fluid has all kinds of particles in it
likely pretty valuable to shifting properly
put the old fluid back in and top off if necessary
just change the filter if it has one inside the pan

I don't mean to derail this thread... But why not replace the fluid? Why put the old fluid back in?
