Ride slack if you saw stowaways and finished your post by describing how slack turned one stowaway into human grease
He said they would see a lot of slack action. Slack occurs on virtually every run. He said people choosing a lumber car are making a mistake because load shifts will occur, slack is not the only reason that happens.

And to be sure I’m not Judging you, but couldn’t help but tie A & B together
You made quite a logical leap and, it would seem to me, an incorrect one based on this part of the statement.

Every now and then would hear about someone finding a dead one.

Cool story. But as someone that’s been in the rail industry what they are doing can be very dangerous. Good luck to them!

Happened to spot them so they got hauled off to jail. No warning, just had the cops come and get them.
I jumped trains all the time when I was a kid. Railroad cops chased us once. I got away, but they caught my buddy. He never ratted on me.
I'm in my 50s now, and a couple of years ago I was jogging and got blocked by a train near Country Day school in Metairie. I thought, "What the hell, it's been decades but I can probably still do it." So I jumped the train, crossed over and jogged home. Got some evil eyes from the waiting drivers, but I laughed all the way home.

People are fricking dumb.
quote:
The dumb ones would ride on lumber cars. That were loaded. Heavy slack action can move the entire load as some find out. One guy all that was visible was a foot and ankle sticking out between the lumber and the bulkhead of the car. He was a grease spot.

Nothing like a good ole lumber human centerbeam sandwich!
One of our distribution centers found a bum dead in a 50' boxcar after a pallet of boards tipped over on him.
If you're going to be an idiot and train hop, at least do it in the open air end of a closed hopper or in an empty gondola.

Yeah, I was always concerned Stobe's drinking while trainhopping would end up being a problem.
I enjoyed his piano renditions of classic rock.

It would be fun to be a flatcar rider if you were in your 20s and didn’t have any real responsibilities.
