Toyota shifts Tacoma pickup production from Texas to Mexico; continues $13 billion US investment

DETROIT – Toyota Motor will shift all production of the Tacoma midsize pickup from Texas to Mexico as it restructures its North American footprint and invests $13 billion in U.S. manufacturing operations through next year.

CNBC

Toyota says no U.S. jobs will be lost as a result of the change, which also includes bringing the Sequoia SUV to the San Antonio plant by 2022. The Texas plant, which also assembles the Tundra full-size pickup, has produced the Tacoma since 2010.

All Tacos will now come from Mexico.

Toyota-Mazda is opening a big new plant near here. Supposed to be 4,000 jobs at the facility and around 24,000 from suppliers in a 75 mile radius.

Turning this sleepy Old South town in to a damn haven for Yankees and other undesirable transplants. Good for revenue, though.

Limestone County, AL. They're building it on land that used to be nothing but cotton. Land that used to be 3-5k an acre is going for north of 25k now.

If I read the article right, the Texas plant that is losing the Tacoma will be shifting to Sequoia production, while the new plant in Huntsville, AL will be producing the Corolla.

I'm sure proximity to Nashville helped with that relocation decision. That is huge for your county.

ETA:

Also just a lot of smart people in Huntsville.

The closest I came to dying in a car was while driving through this area. It has lost my respect.

It's a good location, logistics wise. Access to a major interstate and railroads. Alabama labor laws, low cost of labor, and low cost of property all probably contributed to the decision.

The town isn't prepared for the growth, though. They've barely been able to handle the population growth in the past 10-15 years, but the new addition will add a LOT. I get that growth is good, and I'm glad the town isn't dying, but it's going to be a major headache in terms of traffic, housing, and services.

We are doing better now than I can ever remember, but we can improve a good bit more. All it takes is good leadership and policy, but people in hell want icewater.

This is great news. Now Mexicans have incentive to stay in Mexico.
