I felt homesick during the first couple of nights both times I moved away to school. After that, I never looked back.
I can see where one would feel bored/lonely during intersession and summer terms in a college town, though.

There's definitely a different atmosphere.
Probably because Christmas break is traditionally centered around family while summer is usually filled with partying and vacations.
It's like the mood you have leaving a concert vs leaving church.
