My thought - Steam from the bathroom is sucked out when the ac/heater is running causing the sub-floor/floor to swell.

Guy we bought the house from installed them. He did a lot of shite wrong. Just handy enough to try stuff but not handy enough to do it right.

Not glued and I've knocked them around but there's generally 5-6 in that hallway at any time.

That's a bathroom right there, no leaking.

man, that is some major league gaps...never seen anything like that before. Do they close up completely during the summer?

Most of them do, may have 1-2 but gaps are much smaller

Does the boards only separate in the winter? Engineered boards shouldn't have that level of contraction/expansion...
