I work in a hospital so I think I have some knowledge of what I speak. This isn’t a career for people who can’t stand to see suffering.

You can absolutely develop PTSD from working in an ER. A lot of people working in ICU units right now are likely going to need additional mental healthcare when it's all said and done.

My sister in law is a pediatric ICU nurse. She's not seeing limbs blown off and shite, but I'm sure the guy you're responding to would say she doesn't see anything traumatic even though she sees innocent children die every shift. I would argue she might see more traumatic, more absolutely devastating, soul-crushing shite than my brother who is an ER doc.

And as someone who's working in counseling, I can safely say that while you're right it isn't for everyone, you're utterly misguided in that healthcare workers don't need counseling from time to time to deal with what they see. It's why many are onsite in hospitals.

And that PTSD isn't even remotely exclusive to seeing "legs blown off". That's the silliest thing I've heard.

I literally was asked by a former high school friend who is working in a local COVID unit yesterday (she's a respiratory therapist) where she could seek services. As a profession, there are ongoing discussions on how we're going to address the coming influx of mental health patients in the healthcare field after this.

Don't have time to read the whole thread. Is there anything insightful of is it just the OT showing how edgy it can be?
