Today is the 10th anniversary of one of the most underrated severe weather outbreaks

April 14-16, 2011 was a red letter outbreak for the Deep South and the Great Plains. Over the course of those three days, nearly 180 tornadoes touched down with 29 of those touching down in the state of Alabama on April 15 alone. 43 people were killed in the outbreak with an estimated $2.1 billion done in property damage.
That outbreak would have ranked as the worst for the year at almost any other point in recorded history. As it stood, it wouldn't even rank as the worst of the month as Mother Nature had one more brutal card to play for the month of April in the year 2011.

North Carolina actually took the brunt of this outbreak
24 deaths in the Tar Heel State... 12 alone in Bertie County
the 12 fatalities in Bertie County equaled the number of fatalities in all other states combined during this outbreak
5 of the 13 EF-3 tornados from this outbreak happened in NC (there were no EF-4s or EF-5s in this outbreak)

I remember it well. Looking out the basement window and seeing countless debris falling from the sky was wicked at hell.
The next morning we found all kinds of things on our property like siding, clothing, bills, etc. One of the bills was to an address 90 miles from where it landed in my yard.
We were lucky the long track tornado lifted before it got to us.

I actually tried to chase the one that came through the southern part of Tuscaloosa that day. Due to heavy rains and a few other things that got in the way, I was unable to make contact with the storm. However, there is one video of the April 15 Tuscaloosa tornado that was taken. It was definitely nowhere near as big as the one that would come through just 12 days later.

Here is a link to the National Weather Service SPV day-by-day storm report pages. Just clicking through April 2011 and reading is sobering.
