Very worried. The public is just brushing it off. However it could create a global issue. I’m 100% capitalist, however will end up forcing a universal income. All the stupid things we’re protesting, however I’ve yet to see a plan in place for societal ease into this. It will be in the blink of an eye IMO.

For all of the "learn a trade" evangelists on here, the point is that smart and talented young people who previously would've learned to code or gone a traditional route will now learn a trade and eventually start their own HVAC and plumbing businesses. I'm seeing all of the "retire as a millionaire plumber" videos pop up in my feeds, so I'm sure young people are too. They'll start as apprentices and eventually start their own plumbing or HVAC business. And on top of that, smart and talented people whose jobs have been displaced by AGI wiill "learn a trade" and open their own business.

And then, at some point, there will be more HVAC and plumbing businesses in every town than Dollar Generals, and the value of your time and the price you can charge will be suppressed. Way more competition.

Same thing with restaurant owners. Sombody gets displaced by AGI and says "this might be a blessing in disguise. My real dream in life has been to open my own restaurant. More competition.

If you refuse to believe that, keep wishing I guess.

From Gemini

quote:

As of recent data (primarily from 2023 and 2024), there are approximately 3.05 million to 3.54 million truck drivers employed in the United States.
It's important to note that different sources may provide slightly varying figures due to differences in how they categorize drivers (e.g., including owner-operators, light truck drivers vs. heavy/tractor-trailer drivers, and the specific year of data collection). However, the consensus points to a workforce of over 3 million truck drivers.

That is going to be the biggest shift in my mind.

Plumbing and brain surgery both can be automated along the same principles. A cost effective bot that takes millions of past procedures into account and visualizes and tackles the problem with a fewer set of constraints. The tech is probably already there. It’s just not commoditized yet so it’s not cost effective. That will change

I can’t predict what happens in the future with AI. Maybe it puts has all out of work maybe it doesn’t. I don’t know. Life is too short to sit around and worry about this sort of stuff all the time.

I use AI daily as a corporate lawyer. It’s helpful, but nowhere close to full on replacement - although it doesn’t stop PE groups and their stooge CFOs from thinking they can play lawyer. In 5-10 years? Who knows.

I use several systems: ChatGPT, Grok, SimpleAI/simple docs plugin, and some homegrown stuff. It’s cool if I need a letter template idea or to recommend a clause from our playbook that we’ve used in the past.

However, last week, I sent both Grok and ChatGPT a very simple California statute and said basically: “does this auto-renewal clause apply only to consumers, or also in B2B scenarios?” Grok got it completely wrong. ChatGPT got it right, but as soon as I introduced a contradictory source, it immediately changed its answer to be wrong. Mixed results for me, but overall I’m cautiously pessimistic about my job security long term.

Zero. We’ve been through it before. Industrialization and the invention of mobile equipment like tractors and harvesters put millions of laborers out of work. But it also created other industries and different jobs. AI will do the same.

That’s not what the experts in AI are saying and they do reference what happened before with farming, etc.

Even hvac techs and welders will be replaced sooner than most think. The robots won’t be bound by the human form and will be designed for specific situations and applications. I give it ten years max.

There needs to be a labor revolution on two fronts: legislation that jobs cannot be eliminated in favor of AI and sabotage of the models themselves by training them on bogus data etc.

How much will that plumber be able to charge for taken apart a clogged trap when there are 3 or 4 times as many plumbing businesses in town. Not saying that plumbing isn't a noble profession or a good business to start, but to think that there are such things as AGI proof businesses just doesn't add up, I think.
