If you want circle jerks and regular bar attendees for your night of fun then go ahead to the bar where you can find an open chair at the bar and no crowd. Go to bars that have some kind of interactive activity where there's a good excuse to make conversation with total strangers without it being "weird". Open mic nights are pretty much made for this. While someone's performing, you can talk about them to the person sitting near you at the bar. When a performer comes off stage, you have an opening to talk to them in order to give them a compliment.

I travel out of town 4/5 nights a week, would much rather go out by myself.
