I don’t understand what the big deal is. If people were expecting you to tip at more and more places, then yes, that would be out of hand.

But a little tip jar on a counter is just for if you’re feeling nice and want to throw a buck or some change in. Or if you get change back and would rather just toss it in the jar than carry a bunch of change in your pocket. Nobody is expecting you to tip with a tip jar. Everyone understands it’s just a little something extra if you choose to.

As someone who worked at a place with a tip jar when I was in high school, there might be $20 in the jar at the end of the shift on a good night. It was nice having an extra $40 or $50 in your pocket at the end of the week when working a minimum wage job. It was appreciated.

So I drop a dollar in a tip jar when I can.

One of my kids got a job recently in the service industry. They learnt real quick who tips and who doesnt if you catch my drift. Im talking $70-100+ party of 4 table leaving $0 ZERO

Ain’t nobody got time for dat!

I was out recently and a large table of those folks settled beside our table. It started almost immediately with requests for free items and complaints of incorrect orders. Fatigue.

Tips are supposed to be for going above and beyond

Disagree. "Tips" is an acronym that stands for "To insure prompt service". Going above and beyond should get a higher-than-normal tip. And JSYK, I'm against what tipping culture has become. If I'm seated and being served, my standard tip is 18%. You go above and beyond, my percentage goes up. If I have to sit and wait with an empty glass (factoring in how busy the place is vs amount of staff working) my percentage goes down.

Stopped at Salad Station for lunch a while back. It's all self-serve. Check-out guy spins the tablet around for the tip. No thanks. I feel like I'm teaching him disappointment and also motivation to go find a better paying job.
