It's not. I did it for around half a year, and I still do it on the side. I don't accept orders that are less than $1.50 per mile and under $7 total.
What OP doesn't understand is that even if he tipped $5 dollars on that $22 order, he would still be paying under $30 to push a button and have food arrive at his door. It's a luxury that has never been so accessible to the masses in human history, yet OP thinks it's unreasonable.
It doesn't bother me, because I don't accept those orders. But someone out there is running their car into the ground for a whopping $3 to bring OP heart disease in a bag.

Unless it's a big group order I just don't see how it's worth it. You are paying 50-100% markup not to go get it yourself.

That’s the restaurants fault for shitty people who can’t read a ticket
And you do have that option

Why reward someone for spitting in your food?

I think for $27 I could get someone to bring me a $12 sandwich pretty easily.

So punish the person delivering your food instead of the restaurant who fricked up your order?

I door dash on occasion for extra cash/ to have something to do when bored. There’s occasions when the delivery is like 3 bucks if you don’t tip. Drivers can see how much your getting from the delivery before hand. Personally if it’s not at least 5 I’m not taking it unless it’s a slow day or my acceptance rate is starting to hover around 90%. If you’re not tipping there’s a good chance you’re going to be waiting around a while for a driver to take your order.

You aren't paying the delivery driver $27.
Assuming a $5 tip and a modest delivery of 3 miles, you're paying:
The restaurant to make the food: $12
Taxes: $4
The delivery service to find people willing to bring you food: $6
The delivery driver: $5
The driver's pay comes out to that $5 tip and likely another $3 taken out of the Doordash Fee for $8.
Even keeping with that $27 figure, you think you could pay someone to go to the store, buy ingredients, make you a decent sandwich at their home, get in their car and drive 3-5 miles to your house and leave it at your door? Because you pay for all of that when you hit that place order button.
And yeah, maybe you could give someone $27 to go pick you up a $12 sandwich. That leaves them $15. But what if they're busy? What if it's midnight? What if they are at work? Then what? Do you have a backlog of people waiting for you to call so they can get paid $15 to bring you food?

There are way too many dbags in this country for that to work. It’s a huge problem with Instacart. They allow customers to change tips on orders up to 3 days after delivery.
So customers will order $200 worth of groceries for example with a $15 tip attached to get someone to do their shopping for them, then change the tip to $2 a few days later .

Also, if it’s taking 1.5 hrs to get your food, it’s because you are an awful tipper. Put any sort of respectable tip on your order and it’ll be picked up pronto. There are TONS of people driving on these apps.

Actually you are paying $10 for the service in this scenario.

You did not think this thread through very well. The OT is all about bashing on lazy cheapskates and you painted yourself in that exact light lol
quote:This cost would not have changed much whether you picked it up yourself or not.
Food is $12
Fees and tax is $4

Delivery is $6

Why do they expect a tip?
“Please tip your driver, delivery fees don’t include the tip..”
Yeah right. Fix your policy then.
I agree, they should fix their policy to include at least 20% gratuity for the drivers so they don't get screwed by lazy, cheap pussies like you!

Depends on scale of market. Houma is severely understaffed and we had plenty of orders sitting around due to lack of drivers. Postmates is a shite show and I am glad we fired them across the state.

Yeah right. Fix your policy then.
They don't pay any uber, lift, or food delivery people work a crap. So your tips do help. So either don't be lazy and get your own food, or be nice and tip your driver.

It depends on the services you use. I picked up food from a local restaurant yesterday but was talking with the lady at the counter while she bagged it up. She said well over half the orders they make for Waitr end up sitting on the counter for upwards of an hour before they are picked up. They don't have that problem with the other food delivery services.
Waitr is fricking terrible.
Haha. I had a counter person tell me the exact opposite. He said Doordash sucks and often leaves orders sitting for long periods until pick up.

That's just not true.
Most people that drive work for multiple delivery services at the same time. Maybe Waitr pays shittier rates or something. Point is, the driver is a contractor, not an employee. If you put a $2 tip on an order, I as the driver am not obligated to pick it up for you, I'll park for 5 minutes and wait for something else to appear. I promise you there is a direct correlation between how well you tip and how hot your food is when it arrives

I drive for Waitr to give me something to do while i work out of town and it is true, If a order is below a certain dollar amount i don't even bother. Also dont bother with people who select "Cash Tip option" been stiffed 3 out of the 4 times i accepted one of those.

at least 40-50% of the time when I get to a restaurant I am having to wait for food to be ready.
