How'd your BIL get hit on a scooter? Is that like a moped?
This is what I was wondering as well.
Also if it’s a road going vehicle it needs to be insured. Now if it’s one of those stupid arse electric scooters that kids ride then he’s up a shite creek.
Also, if this girl is carrying minimum liability I hate to break it to the OP she probably has zero assets to go after.

The nice lady who hit your BIL is on the hook for $500k in damages. Her insurance company contractually obligated itself to pay up to $15k on her behalf.
How do you get the $485k from her?
Take the judgment. She files bankruptcy,
I think you missed the whole point. I don't want to be in the position of this nice lady. I want to have coverage so if I frick up, I don't have to file for bankruptcy.

Sounds like another great reason to quit my job, file for all the benefits, not have insurance, and when I frick over someone’s life just hit them with the whoopsie and move on. I’ll probably get some stimulus checks along the way for not contributing.
Great idea. Once you have enough assets for the rest of your life, first convert to high grade diamonds and you can sew them in ratty clothes you wear. Then follow the rest of your plan. Sell diamonds as needed for trips, etc.

No, what if they do own a home, and have 401k's, etc? The lawyer is going to take that shite. That's what I mean by "financially destroy".
LOL, that just isn't how it works for 80%+ of defendants. 99% of the remainder of those are in cases of willful and malicious or DUI. The tiny percentage left is the ones that would rather pay than file bankruptcy, which is incredibly few with very specific circumstances and almost always high net worth.
If he expects to receive more than the insurance coverage that can be gotten to he will likely be very disappointed.
Think about this: in your entire life, have you known anyone to get financially "destroyed" by being a defendant in an auto accident? There are tons of cases with excess damages, but a tiny portion are ever satisfied. This is why you protect yourself. Outside of a fender bender it is likely heavily on you.

No one does. But I’d rather be in her position than your BIL.
My advice is how to not end up like your BIL. If you do that, you also won’t end up like the lady as you’ll be sufficiently covered.

So I go to everyone's favorite insurance website, USAA, and see what it would take to raise my legal minimum liability insurance to a million dollars, and remarkably, it only raised my premium by 17%. Of course I made the change. I urge you all to up your Liability insurance on your Auto policies. You
You sound like my local USAA rep. Is that you?

You are also missing the point.
It's not about getting my BIL rich on a lawsuit. That's not what I'm talking about. Whether or not the lady is broke or not.
I do have assets that someone could go after, so after this experience I went and up'd my insurance so if I'm the one who gets sued in some car accident, it doesn't necessarily wipe me out or file for bankruptcy. Some of y'all are trying to read too much into this.
I'm saying it's a good idea to up your liability insurance so you don't have to deal with bankruptcy and legal fees. It's cheap. Do it.
Tip of the Day.

He just needs his hospital bills paid, and some lost wages. It's the lawyer who takes 40% who is trying to jack it up as high as possible.

This is a damn good reminder. Tuesday in my financial day and I just put it on my list. Thanks!

and legal fees
This is known as cost of defense. Which is why I don’t self insure. The cost to defend is extremely high if you self insure and someone comes after you. The insurance company has a duty to defend you even if the policy limits are exceeded. If anyone wants to self insure, they should at least get minimal coverage for cost of defense.

You weren’t lying when you said you were ignorant and needed to learn.

Boy your bil is stupid. Most you can swindle is her asset value not including her home if owned. young mom two kids typically have more credit card charges than assets. you must be an insurance salesman

Dude. You do realize he knows what he is talking about? I think you need to learn some terminology and how insurance works.
