Time to put the train under the Christmas tree (not a euphemism)

It is time to assemble a train set up under the Christmas tree (a great holiday tradition).
If you use the Lionel train size (o gauge), get track from Menard's that has a wider radium (54" would be just about right). It minimizes the risk of the train dumping over on curves.
If you don't have one, there are plenty of Lionel sets, though they are made in China now. Or, there are people (I can refer you to someone) who can set you up with a mechanically reworked vintage Lionel Made in US train.
I don't have much in the way of operator type trains, but I have given some friends and both my sons trains for under the tree. In each case, I have them reworked first.
Here are some Xmas tree train setups (not mine):

My parents have a train track that attaches and encircles the tree. I have a wooden train with a Santa that I display on the mantle.

I station a platoon of Panzers in an herringbone formation under our tree.

I bought one from Macy's a couple years ago but didn't set it up. How does one build that raised platform in the pics?

Having cats, all I see is a disaster here.
Those are some cool setups though. One of my Dad's retired railroad buddies has a whole room set up like that with a track that goes around the top of the room with a train running on it. He'd switch it out depending on the season.

The best looking Christmas trains are the wide/standard gauge trains, which are much larger than the typical Lionel O gauge train. Lionel and American Flyer both made these trains in the 20's and early 30's. The trains are very sturdy. I set up a Christmas display in a local bank with one set.
You can see the size difference in these two photos - O gauge in the front, standard/wide gauge in the back.

As kids, we'd blast the shite out of those Airfix soldiers (little plastic ones). They had a wide variety of soldiers. I think I still have a big bag of German soldiers stuffed away somewhere.
