It's something like 2% of the population join the military anyways... so.... not sure how much this really impacts us?

Based on some of the things I had heard from a recruiter friend I'd be more concerned about the stupidity than the fat part. They are having trouble getting lots of applicants able to pass their practice ASVAB tests to ensure they won't get to MEPS and not qualify.
Inability to pass the ASVAB, which covers basic high school knowledge, just after graduating is terrifying

I don't doubt this. The military isn't an option like it used to be. You don't get cream of the crop kids like you once did. They go to college then decide if they want to go into the military.

In my experience there are a lot of smart enlisted people. A surprising amount of them even have their degrees. Then they get out. Now the NCO corps...

Depends on the subject. i have a 17 year old just graduated at a good school out here in Jax. She has no concept of history or geography. They teach math , science and english for these standardized test these days and not much else.
So i agree to at least half your statement.

Maybe the reason talented kids don't want to join the military anymore is because they'll just be sent to the middle of nowhere to risk their life fighting some goalless war.

Not surprising.
When I commanded a recruiting company, only about 1/3 of the eligible population was qualified for service. I assume that number has dropped even further since then (left in 2009).

The main reason kids can't pass the ASVAB is because of this alternative math bullshite they teach in school.
The ASVAB does not allow you to bring in any calculator or similar device (smart phone, etc.) to the test and requires you to actually use scratch paper to do math...the way it should always be taught.

I find this hard to believe. The ASVAB was the easiest standardized test I have ever taken.

Something NEEDS to be done. Americans are getting fatter and fatter. High School PE classes arent cutting it.
