just a fan
but the old Esler Field, don't know why they built it in the middle of nowhere, was a nice little airport

ah, now it makes perfect sense, shut down a military base and move the civilian field to the old military field then reopen the civilian field for military ops
Well, to be completely frank about it, Esler was also a military airfield when constructed for WWII in the '40s.
So, logistically, would you give the full bore, Cold War AFB with 9k foot strips to the National Guard, heavily used by rotary wing and plus up the old regional airport in the middle of nowhere (although it just happens to be near a major National Guard base), with its 6k foot strips?
Or do what Ellick did? Convert the big USAF base to an international (thank you very much) airport and give the old regional airport that is almost walking distance to the major National Guard base (and was originally built as an airfield for that very same base) to the National Guard.

For the record, I knew you were smarter than all that. I just wanted to clear up things for someone not plugged into your quirky sense of humor.

You are one of my go to posters on aviation issues.

was a fighter base for decades,
What did you fly out of there, Boeing P-26’s or Curtis P-36’s?

Fast Eddie was pretty cool when he was in the squadron but really got the big head when he took over Eastern Airlines, when we tried to get on with them he wouldn’t give us the time of day

Some guys, when they get the big office, forget they ever knew you.

Makes sense. It's an old Air Force Base, so it probably has the facilities.
The air base was known as England Air Force Base. It was home to the A10 Warthogs. Base was closed during Clinton Administration when he reduced number of bases. Don’t recall if some army or marine bases were closed. Supposedly, the air base has one of the longest runways

My family has a place in Grant Parish. Those Warthogs would come in right over the trees, and you'd never hear them until about two seconds before they roared right over you.
Definitely got your blood flowing .

Was at air base when the A10s were returning from the first Gulf war. A lot of people were there to welcome them home. True, you saw the A10s before you ever heard them. Had read reports the Iraqis didn’t know they were on them until it was too late.

Ever seen a full combat loaded A-10 take off? Probably needed every foot
Reminds me of being at Incirlik AB Turkey and watching one of their few F-104’s take off back in the late 80’s.
Thought that plane was never gonna rotate and leave the runway

The higher the temp, and the altitude above sea level, the more runway you need.

Yea, which is why they closed the local airport and moved it to the former England Air Force Base.

If you hear the bbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrttttttttt you weren't the intended target.
Also, one of my dad's cousin's was flying an A-10 at that time. We were standing there on the tarmac when they came back and they did the fly-by.

During WWII, it was mainly a B-17 base.
When it reopened during Korea, it was F-84 Thunderjets, then P-51Ds and F-86 Sabres.
Then F-100s, then (USAF) A-7D Corsair IIs, then A-10s.
