There was only a few of those around at that time. I don't think the navy was to keen yet on letting them do it. At least that is what I heard. At that time it was exclusively 637 class. Later became the job of the 688 improved. I finished my career on a 688i.

We never hear about u.s. subs concerning anything.

The submarine I was in was one of the first designed for that purpose but ironically never breached ice. Would have been a cool adventure though.

Only when something fricked up happens. We made the news twice... once for getting in a collision with a merchant ship and once when they blamed our sonar for a bunch of dolphins beaching themselves along the Florida coast

I actually remember this... unless it happens frequently and it was a different sub accused. Like 50-75+ dolphin beached themselves down near the keys/Miami area, maybe 12-15 years ago?

What does it sound like on the inside when you’re punching through the ice?!?!

My buddy was on a boat that caught a fishing trawler net. Off the coast of Norway I think, on a Northern run. Drug the trawler like a quarter of a mile.

Broke through the ice in 2 different sturgeon class subs. Older boats but we could turn our fairwater planes vertical, which the LA class boats couldn't do
Partially accurate hulls 688 to 619 couldn’t go vertical. My boat SSN-720 was the first. She was also the first fast attack to have vertical launch tubes for TLAMs and was one of a group of submarines to be the first to launch missiles in combat (Desert Storm)

What the point of them doing that? They will never be unloading, loading, or fighting a battle out on the frozen tundra.
Polar routes usually shave off time and distance.

It’s a slow process.
You scan for thin ice....fill your ballast tanks with air until you’re buoyant enough to break through and voila “hello polar bear”
I heard nothing but that’s bc I was in the center of the ship “cranking” (mess duty)

The SmarterEveryDay guy has a series on submarines. He visited some subs chilling in the arctic ice.

Definitely part of generation qual card!
One particular duty night I earned 7 signatures by having 4 pizzas delivered to the boat.
I also earned another 5 when my wife delivered 2 for $1 McDonald’s cheeseburgers in her Daisy Dukes one day

Talked to one of my sea pups a while back. He was always trying to get qual sigs at the last minute. He reminded me of the time I made him drink distilled vinegar for sigs... he turned white and started sweating and puking.
Another time I made him eat mayo mixed with dip I had in my mouth for sigs.
He was the GOAT NUB

My biz partner was a submariner in the Pacific for 8 years. Got out on 2016 I believe. Now, he tells a story where they would "tube fish". Open the outside hull torpedo tubes which would get some fish in there then let the galley do the rest. Is this bulsh or real?
