I spent 8 years in Air Force. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I was the same way but it was right about the time I graduated college. I had done enough internships to realize I was too young to sit behind a desk. So 4 years later here I sit, enlisted AF and am currently putting together my OTS package. Been a heck of a ride so far.

curious, why didn't you go that route straight out of college?
Posted on 11/4/14 at 4:11 pm to 777Tiger
Two reasons:
1) Enlisting first would allow me to really decide that this is something I wanted to do.
2) Enlisting first would give me a leg up on my application (which it kinda does, but kinda doesn't)

Mid 20s, college degree, single, and have a good job in financials.

Once I put on Staff I'll start my package. Its going to be tough though. Esp b/c my grades when I finished college in 08 where not that good.

I figured 4 years and an honorable discharge if I didn't like it would be preferable to resigning my commission.

You aint kiddin. Plus I see some of the packages that civilians are putting together and it makes mine look like a long shot but heck, I gotta try, ya know?

that's right, don't worry about anyone else, let them tell you no, this is where being enlisted does offset for some of the other things, your leg up

How hard is it to get accepted as an officer?

not hard, supply and demand is a factor, but 4 year degree, clean background, some physical quals depending on what area, i.e. pilot training, but they need you, and you are bringing assets to the table too

Mid 20's is young. You will not feel like an old Lt at all.

You are clearly made of the right stuff if you got into West Point. Like you said you think it is a mistake. You are only in your 20's. I am very proud of my service. The people that apply to the likes of Service Academies have that desire to serve. Fill that desire.

It's pretty tough, but if you put together a good package you have a shot. This is where enlisting first I think helps out. It seems that not alot of enlisted people apply, but the percentage they take is pretty good. A recruiter can give you more info since you are coming in from the civilian side.
ETA: Forgot you got a recommendation to West Point. That should definitely help you out

OTS is alive and well. Boards were delayed for a while but now they are meeting again. I don't know the acceptance rates right now but I'd assume less than 10% for non-rated boards.
Rated boards will have a much higher acceptance rate.

Has anyone joined the AF and NOT liked it? Generation after generation in my family served back to the civil war, but they are all army so I don't really have anyone to talk to with personal experience with it.
