re: Thoughts about joining Air Force?

If you have a degree, you should talk to an OTS recruiter. If you go to a regular recruiter, they'll try to get you to come in enlisted. If you can come in as an officer, please do it, or at least try. The Air Force was great for me and my family. It was a regular job, minus the deployments and occasional 12 hour shifts due to deployment exercises.

the OP just sounds like he might be bored.
People ask me why I joined the Navy...I tell them honestly...College was not for me at the time, I was bored with where I was, and I wanted something extremely different...
Some of the best times and experiences I can imagine during my enlistment..

Yeah now that I'm thinking about it, boredom might not be the worst reason in the world, especially if you're unattached and young.
There's not a whole lot of downside (other than the danger inherent in some jobs). The only people Ive known who really regretted joining, for the most part, sucked at life and would have been miserable doing most things anyway.
But, I do wonder if the OP would be just as happy by just uprooting and moving to a different part of the country.

He has a degree
Hes E-3 regardless

Two things the gunner career field is the flip of the coin. You are either a flight engineer/ gunner on a helo or you are on an AC-130 just reloading. You don't shoot shite while on the gun ship.

You're right of course. I really don't get the enlisted talk. If someone has the opportunity to enter the military as a commissioned officer, they should do so IMO. It's a higher quality of life. I never met an officer that said "I wish I had come in enlisted."
I was enlisted when I was in the Army, BTW.

I'm a retired AF E-8 so I would definitely advocate the AF over any other service. It was the best 20 years of my life.
And the skills I learned in the AF paid off with a nice job with a Government contractor after I retired.

I looked at the latest rated board results and I was shocked.
76.57% selection rate (304 selected out of 397). What really shocked me was that only 25 of them were prior enlisted. The remaining 279 were fresh off the street. This was October 2014.
The last non-rated board had 93 out of 306 selected (30.39% selection rate) and 21 were prior enlisted. This was February 2014. I was definitely off on the less than 10% selection rate.
Bottom line here is the selection rates are great for rated and decent for non-rated. Sheer numbers show more civilians selected than enlisted guys/girls. No info on how many enlisted applied.

So you are saying there is a chance??
Only thing is my grades in college sucked below a 3.0 but this was 6 years ago. I would have to get a grade waiver. But my enlisted career has been pretty good. BTZ, made staff in 4 years. Won some awards, got picked up to work at wing hq yada yada yada. I also wanted to go into a very undermanned career field in 13L.

That's the key for those that cross over, get a career field that AF needs...
For initial entry folks, if they want to stay competitive, they can pick just about any of them...
Formerly, the easiest life path for an officer is probably ABM...it means you will live either Alaska, Okinawa, Belgium, Germany, but mostly Oklahoma City, Warner Robins GA, or Omaha. I think they are going to begin choking that career field out, though.
