For all you history buffs out there.

Remember, when this happened, the Germans and Soviets were allies and split Poland in half at the beginning of the war. The German attack brought the English and French into WWII on the side of the allies, but nothing was said or done to the Soviets.

Stalins's executioner

I like the way he died of "suicide" two years after Stalin died. Beria was executed around the same time.

The massacres at Katyn were blamed on the Germans for 50 years or so. The NKVD was a monstrous organization and the Soviet regime every bit as monstrous and brutal as the Nazis.

PBS did a fantastic series on many of the diplomatic and behind the scenes actions regarding the Soviets and the Allies called WWII: Behind Closed Doors. I believe the entire series is on youtube and I highly recommend it.

Holy shite.

I dunno...what Wikipedia says seems legit.

He reportedly sank into alcoholism, went insane, and died February 3, 1955, with the official cause of death listed as "suicide".

If he was really a crazy alcoholic, he might not have cared if someone else shot him anyway.

I'll have to check it out, thanks.

Here's what the Soviets did to Estonia prior to the war (the partition of Poland agreement gave the Baltic States to the USSR).

Estonia suffered far worst than the three Baltic States. It's sickening. To this day, over 50% of the citizens of Estonia are Russian. Stalin destroyed the country on his own basically.

Many of the people involved in the large scale killings of the time, both German and Russian, had serious issues dealing with it afterwards. Suicides among them is not uncommon.

Want to see something really chilling? If you have Netflix, watch a movie called The Act Of Killing. It will disturb you.

I just wonder what a person has to tell themselves to justify it.

Some of the early war atrocities were brutal. This was before the industrial killing when you put a pistol to a man, woman or childs head and pulled the trigger, and did that thousands of times per day. I can believe that would be hard to live with.

Good point.

But Kruschev had Beria executed, so he could have had this clown executed as well. Either way, I hope he died a slow painful death.

The first German executioners using gunshot as the means of execution could quit at any time without repercussions.

Of course, they were sent directly to the Eastern Front.

OTOH, a Soviet executioner couldn't quit.

What's amazing is that both sides kept meticulous records. That comes hand in hand with a powerful central government.

I didn't notice one of the sources was the Guinness Book of World Records.

This guy literally ran a killing factory. I wonder if he ever lined 2 guys up and went for a double kill.

I'm pretty sure he was more concerned with ruthless efficiency than achievement points

The irony is that the Germans actually either didn't, destroyed a massive bulk of them, or they have yet to be discovered. There are meticulous records of many shootings and atrocities behind the front lines but the record of deaths at concentration camps that would account for the millions claimed to be lost are absent.
