If its that cheap, than my 45 year old arse should be able to afford it pretty easily by saving a little and then paying it off yearly.

Maybe some people just think that it's a financial responsibility that should be handled by the student instead of the parent.

The closet major university to where I grew up is honestly not worth going to.

Not everyone lives within commuting to their in-state university.

The overwhelming majority of kids live within 45 min of a state college or JC.

They may not get the ideal college experience but neither did kids 40 years ago footing the bill

As I have argued, this wouldn't have been possible. And taking on debt limits the payoff on the back end.

Well boo fricking hoo. Life is full of decisions that need to be made.

Its 2018, every state has public universities that offer a significant amount of basic coursework online for the same per hour cost as attending in person. A student could easily knock out half a college degree from wherever their parents may live.

I will give you that point. Online courses are an excellent way to get basic credits out of the way.

Huh, so you decided a more expensive school would be better for your future? Seems like you would also agree that spending money to go there would be a better long term play than saving money by going to the closer one...

No, can't say I've heard of this exact term. I'm guessing googling it will bring me to this page of this thread and nowhere else.

You can't really complain about the consequence of a financial decision you chose, that you were not forced into and had other options.

Indeed, and fortunately I had good parents who didn't mortgage my future and that of my siblings for their own personal financial gain.

That's fine and dandy, but why are they additionally arguing its the best and only way?

I could make the same argument for a 16 year old that goes to private HS. Again, I don't understand why we are stating that every 18 year old is instantly responsible enough to make a financial decision that will affect the rest of their life.

Why is it so bad that as a parent, I'd rather my child concentrate on school their first year or two in college than worry about working and school?

The idea that the best way through college is doing it on your own financially is absurd. Its one way and its perfectly acceptable, but the best way is absurd.

I'm guessing you have no guilt about blowing your parents money for your own personal gain?

No idea, I can't keep up with everyone's claims. I haven't seen too many people say it's the only way.
