The two premiere generals of the War Between the States. One an aristocrat from Virginia, the other a store clerk from Illinois. Both men were known for their aggressive tactics, and both men are regarded as two of the most successful commanders in American military history. That all being said....who do you think was better?

Boh overrated. Lee was a Napoleonic general at the dawn of modern industrial warfare. Grant had a poor grasp of tactics, but he understood logistics and attrition.

The real debate should be Jackson vs Sherman.

whoever has overwhelming advantages in men and materials

Anybody who isn't an idiot (like the first 2 or 3 guys Linoln picked) could win

Lee was better (, by how much? I don't know). Even with overwhelming resources, it took Grant a year to wear down Lee's army.

Point of order, his Vicksburg and Chattanooga campaigns tell me the exact opposite.

Grant was a drunkard
Lee bested him at West Point
Lee was the Union's first choice

It actually only took him a month and a half to completely immobilize Lee's army and lay siege to it south of the James River. While he had wanted to destroy it, he had effectively checked it by June 1864.

Lee was a poor strategist and neglected his troops.

Sherman did what had to be done. He had to send a message to the South what happens when you step out of line. People had to be made an example of.
