when a representative from New York wants folks to pay higher taxes she really wants to give more money to other states?

Yes in theory. If they want NY tax payers to pay more.

It's easy to follow here. Pink is what the state pays the feds. Green is what the state takes from the feds.

Virginia, loaded with government workers, is feeding itself at the trough.

Go figure.

Never understood lumping in social security and Medicare taxes & spending in these types of reports. They are like 75% of the direct spending listed. They are not the same as Medicaid, SNAP, and other true welfare programs. Interesting that - “Participation — or not — in the Medicaid expansion program appears to have a significant impact on the per capita total Federal spending in this category.”

Military employee wages and research grants are going to have a bigger effect on the $ received per Capita with a state like Alaska. In a comparison across states have to also account for the fact the federal govt owns or controls so much of the land in Western States including over 40% of California i think.

Though it may not effect much I also don’t know how well these reports take into account where a multi-state or national business/corporation earns their money. They seem to back off using IRS report like with personal income tax data and use data & assumptions from Bureau of Economic activity for some of their corporate income tax allocations. Even some spending data is based budgets or assumptions based on prior years instead of actual $.

This article is based on a report done out of New York and for New York. While their “deficit” may still exist they are putting it in a way that bests suits the narrative they desire and/or wanted to focus on. NY bitched about same thing in 80s & 90s and seemed to take a break around 2001 and seemed very needy around 2009, but something must have happen past couple of years to have this pop back up.

Blue state representatives thrust unending welfare on the entire country then vilify states that have welfare recipients. Brilliant.

Why is CA the only one split?

Because their end of the graph only goes to $15K, so their numbers won’t fit if stacked.

That might be the worst graph I have ever seen.

They should have made that fricking graph harder to read. It’s like no challenge at all.

“Also I think this shows a great representation of how some States should be pissed the government is taking away their money to pay for welfare programs.”

Like NASA and supercolliders, interstates and hospitals, Green energy subsidies, federal flood insurance, military bases the military does not want to keep open? Aircraft carriers that don’t work? That kind of welfare? This is ALL federal spending baw.

I’m shocked Florida and California are not higher..
