WOW life is so better in progressive multi cultural city
Well, since Baton Rouge IS a multicultural (i.e., more than one culture) city, it would seem that your premise is that it should become a "progressive" city. What is your definition of a "progressive" city? New York? Boston? LA? You don't realize there is crushing poverty in those cities as well, with a similar degree of unskilled/uneducated and poor economic options for them as well? They only have diverse and high end economic drivers, and a shitton of 1%ers that help to provide a tax base for all the cool bells and whistles (psst....a lot of them are either in, or are on the edge of, financial collapse because of all of the government spending). You drop a massive international banking sector into downtown Baton Rouge, along with the headquarters or main nation/regional offices of some big corporations, and BTR could be nice, bright and shiny too.

The state is 33% black, which I would think the vast majority live between NO and BR.

Couple this with a city that is very limited on job opportunities for the unskilled or under educated
You know what else is inbetween BR and NO? a shite load of plants. You know what you don't see in plants? a bunch of black guys.
If you consider that the majority of private schools in the area are mostly white, you could say that it's probably close to 50/50 on blacks and whites that graduate from high school in this area that don't go to college, yet the vast majority of plant workers are white.
Saying there aren't unskilled job opportunities is horse shite. There are tons of them, and if you're willing to really work, you can make a very, very good living. Even more importantly, if you are willing to work and show you're responsible, maybe even try to take some river parish community college classes, you can work yourself into a desk job instead of manual labor job, making more than just about anyone that graduated from college outside of doctors, engineers, and other standouts from certain non liberal arts degrees.

That's what you get when your only industry is oil and they destroy the place and leave.

I disagree though that city lacks opportunities for blue collar labor though as construction is still booming around here

My POV is that the only way out of the issues of poverty and crime in BR is HEAVY investment in schools and education. As in doubling or tripling what is currently going to public school system. And this is a 2-3 decade investment that needs to be made without ever expecting to see an immediate return.
That is a price that a lot of BR is not willing to pony up and pay because it is already a highly taxed community and a lot of those would be tax dollars are being funneled into the private school system already. And I understand why.

the industrial construction market is huge, with jobs for all skill levels. Seriously, with rudimentary reading skills and a clean piss test you can make a lot of money if you are willing.
$18/hr.
That's what u skilled contract workers start at in most places.
All you need is a beating heart and clean piss.
But Leroy either can't stay clean, cant Continuously come to work when he's supposed to, or he can't take constructive criticism.
My company hires day laborers to just pick up trash. They are paid $10.50/hr and usually get at least 10 hours of OT a week. Just got to pass a drug test and be willing to work 10's.

How is spending more money on schools going to change the attitude and mindset of these idiots? until parenting gets better, no amount of money being poured into the schools will change anything.

not really sure what you're trying to say here. People that send their kids to private schools pay taxes too. are you implying that you'd rather their tuition go towards taxes that can go to public schools, and everyone goes to public schools? Even if the public schools got better here, the vast majority of parents that send their kids to private schools, will still send their kids to private schools.

Please provide some links? I don't think you know how taxation for schools works. Property taxes pay for schools in LA. The majority of public school enrollees in BR, I would venture to say do not have parents that pay property taxes considering our Homestead exemption is at $75k. So Commercial property owners and middle to upper-class homeowners are almost solely supporting public schools and receive almost no benefit from public schools. Also, public schools in BR do not have a revenue problem, they have a progressive policy problem.

This is the one thing that I never understood, no skill required, just show up. How fricking hard is it to show up on time everyday? Most jobs will let you get away with being under skilled or a complete moron if you can just show up everyday, and people can't even do that.

Yep. We pay taxes to fund schools that we refuse to use and pay private school tuition

I agree. Single parent homes is the biggest issue but rap does glorify thuggery, drugs and violence. When all of the Master P types were popular in Nola murders were at all time highs
