How would Napa shake out for a single guy in his late 20s? I know it's not as glamorous as SF or L.A., but it's somewhat affordable and only about 40 miles to the north of SF.

Just as Roger said, California has incredibly diverse landscapes. You've got mountains, deserts, multiple major cities and one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Napa County, Sonoma County(which I prefer to Napa), Muir Woods, Yosemite NP, Sequoia NP, Kings Canyon NP, Tahoe, and Carmel/Big Sur are all within around 4 hours from San Francisco. Each one of those areas is worth a visit on its own. San Diego may be my favorite city in Cali, but if I had to live there for the rest of my life, I'd stick to NorCal because of the everything I mentioned above.
Not everywhere in California is expensive. However, if you guys really know the state, you would admit that you really wouldn't want to live in the cheaper areas. No one is dying to move to Modesto, Fresno or Bakersfield. Taxes ARE high. The government doesn't seem to really value personal freedom as much as other states. They almost seem to want to make it difficult to do business.
There is a lot of talent in California. I believe 5 of the top 25 universities in the country are there. Silicon Valley is juggernaut... Something like 30-40% of venture capital investment is invested in SV companies.
Good- The weather in plenty of areas, tremendous amount of environmental diversity, good food, San Diego, San Francisco, fantastic BEER/wine scene, some of the best national parks, and plenty of other things.
Bad- Taxes are high, less freedom, housing in the places you would want to live is very expensive... Another thing I'd add, and this is one man's opinion, but I didn't care for the people there. I've visited most states, and every region, and the people in California are my least favorite.

How do you have less freedom in Cali?
That makes no sense whatsoever

The more one pays in taxes, fees, licensure, etc., the less freedom one experiences.

Very restrictive gun/knife laws, more hoops for businesses to jump through, mandatory recycling, etc. I don't see how you don't realize that California's government is a little more Big Brotherish.
I never said it was Soviet Russia.

I wouldn't mine one day putting a trailer on a piece of property in the mountains of cali. I asked my uncle a while back if he would ever think about moving his trailer that we live in out west. He laughed. Too many queers he said. Makes since I guess.
lol, thanks for providing evidence for the "pro-California" stance

Yes, I am serious. When someone forcibly takes your profits/wages, and spends it as they see fit, it directly affects your ability to spend it as you please. This is, very simply, a restriction on freedom.
Of course, there are many other variables that can be accounted for in a standard of life, and one may find that an area with higher taxes may still suit one better than an area with lower taxes but less activities.

I personally think California is the best state in the US.

I'd move to California in a New York minute if it didn't have the most oppressive, burdensome state government in the country (though Illinois and NY make a strong case for the title).
I found California to be less oppressive than CT or NY. Knew more hunters in Cali than I do in Florida.
12% State income tax drove me out. It all goes to pensions for useless gov't employees and not enough to roads and schools. shite schools and highways (the 101) with potholes all over. Too bad really. It is an amazing place to live. Most of my friends out there were republicans, and the others were just surfer dudes who didn't really give a frick.

If I worked for somebody, I'd consider it. As an entrepeneur (not of the tech variety, either), the idea of starting a business in California is daunting and expensive.
Yeah, I definitely see your point there. Average starting salaries in Cali are typically close to $50 in the business world, so it definitely offsets the high COL.

What guns can't you bring? The primary complaints I heard from hunters were about the lead regulations.

Florida is better than California.
The frick it is. Florida is filled with wierdos and there is very little to do outdoors comparitavely. Lame hiking/camping, surfing is no comparison, no skiing, no wine country.....I like Florida for economic reasons, but Cali is superior in almost every way.

have you ever seen their gun laws?
licensing requirements? regulatory schemes?
this is all ignoring taxation (which cali has a frick ton of)

When I lived there, I couldn't bring the AR I owned, and I had to purchase all new magazines for my handguns. You also have to register all handguns... Soon I believe they are forcing people to register ALL guns, even bolt-action rifles.

Got it. Registering rifles is stupid. Most places outside the South are going to make you register handguns these days.

I sure hope so. Looks that way after reading it again.
