its just a by product of gas right and cheaper to produce?)

Then as semis started to become more popular (because diesel was cheaper) it went up above the gas price (was it simply because of demand?)
Not at all.

Yep. There's ways around anything and regulations always drive black markets, the size depending on the amount of inconvenience caused by said regulation.
The majority of people follow the rules and would keep their DEF tanks full in the name of keeping the check engine light off. Instead people are pushed to just get rid of everything and say frick it, I'm blowing soot.

I'm afraid we're approaching the end of those. The EPA has made it clear they will hold suppliers responsible for end users actions and it's going to have a troubling impact. For example, companies like Cobb and SCT are looking to require extensive documentation to supply "off-road" devices. I'm not defending people trying to defeat emissions compliance(regardless of how stupid I think most of it is), but the weaponization of the EPA bothers me.

ONE DAY, the masses will wake up.... Hopefully tomorrow.

You'd need a spare ECM, body control module, maybe a PCM, and maybe even a radio. Swap all the factory electronics out with replacements, program those, and replace ALL of the factory hardware for warranty work, and then you MIGHT get away with it. You'd be a no good worthless piece of dishonest shite for doing it though.
Warranty work ain't even worth it. Hell it isn't but 3 years for the powertrain & 6years for the SCR on Cummins engines. Now the dealer won't work on a deleted truck, but many diesel mechanics will. I downloaded Cummins Insite software and can do most of this crap myself now. Before... any major code or de-rate meant a trip or tow to the shop to clear the codes because just any ECM scanner ain't gonna do that. BTW I'm talking big trucks here, not pickups.

I disagree. Spraying DEF in the pipe is a really simple way to cut NOx emissions wayyyyyyyy down. The problem is all of the requirements to monitor DEF quality, NOx reduction rates, derates for non-compliance, etc etc. Just spray the shite in the pipe.
Exactly right. A lot of the times the system is still working but still de-rates because of a sensor... and this de-rate stuff is all mandated by the EPA. It's stupid and often puts drivers in dangerous situations. They could make it SO much simpler and more reliable than the pile of junk under there now.

My dad gets 13 mpg in Baton Rouge, 17 on the highway. Ecoboost ain't worth it. I get better than that in my 20 year old Tahoe.
I normally get 22-23 mpg highway driving in mine and 15-17 around town.
