There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on the entire planet. If every star has an average of 2-3 planets, the law of averages should say there are at least a Billion other planets with life.
This seems to be the most common form of reasoning from the scientific community, which is plausible; however, what's more intriguing to me is the question of "what if we're the only planet with life on it?" What would that mean?
The reality is, the answer scares the scientific community more so than some AI life form hell bent on conquering humanity...it would point towards an intelligent creator of humans.

I'm not atheist or anything but it wouldn't point to a creator at all. You only say that because the Biblical story says that. It's circular reasoning. Correlation is not causation, etc.
However, it would point that life might be a pretty big fricking mistake

i see you got some downvotes for that
my question to the dissenters is what difference would it make if God is a super advanced AI or a non-corporeal spiritual being?

I think the experiences of humanity with extraterrestrial craft are basically us perceiving beings who have manifested into this dimension. They have mastered quantum physics to a point that they travel beyond the parameters of space and time, or beyond the fourth dimension as we know it. Too many eyewitness reports of craft simply "blinkering" out of existence. They have mastered the multidimensional nature of the universe and traveling from here to the other side of the known universe is like driving to the store around the corner. Who or what those beings are composed of I have no clue. They could be organic or artificially created beings.

Well for one I don't think he'd be the God of the middle east that most everyone has branded into their heads

Maybe so, but it would be just as presumptuous to reason away the possibility based off of "correlation doesn't equate to causation" logic.
However, the thought that aliens derive from another dimension is very interesting - maybe God, angles, demons, ghost, and UFOs are all one-and-the-same from a different dimension? After all, some physicist believe there are up to 15 different dimensions...
Ultimately, it doesn't matter to me, although it does interest me, my faith is in God.

I didnt expect this coming from the Audie Murphy of the ot lounge.

Ehh there's no such thing as "kind of" self-aware, there either is or isn't self awareness, regardless of how failed experimenters label their near misses.

See, this is very plausible but it sucks to me. I do feel that AI will always seek dominance, and will eventually try and take over. I feel we should abandon AI all together.
The concept that AI seeks dominance is a figment of SciFi fantasy. AI seeks to improve upon its original coding but that original goal doesn't change, power, domination etc are human qualities that people project onto AI.
We are too late to abandon AI all together, but even hypothetically if we could that would be incorrect as the benefits of AI greatly outweigh the negatives. That is with the negatives including a real possibility of extinct of the human race.

The Great Filter explaination of the Fermi Paradox says that we hope not to find life out there.
For instance, if we find multicellular life somewhere on Mars and Europa, then it pretty much means the odds for humanity pretty much suck.

Fermi paradox and its related discussions (which go far beyond just a great filter) are legit
I never understood the civilization classifications.
It is made up bullshite. Trying to do it is like telling a biologist to develop taxonomy for his findings on the expedition before he leaves.

They are based on energy consumption/energy harvesting. Like I said in the OP, that's how we view the world, but there is no evidence to suggest an advanced ETI has the same predilections as us.
