he commanding officers would not risk something which might show the humanity of the enemy or inhibit the slaughter when the time came.
Great moment in history, but a terrifying moment for the leadership of both sides. If this had been allowed to continue, there's no question there would be mass mutiny on both sides. There was still fricking hope in 1914. If say 1916 rolls around and this happens in mass, I'm willing to bet both sides would have killed their commanding officers and refused to fight the other side in the aftermath.

How many would know about this is not for Dan Carlin?
I knew about it when I was in 10th grade. I had a good history teacher though.

I love this story. It’s both incredibly beautiful and incredibly sad.
It’s beautiful to see that the most hellish circumstances can’t crush the human spirit. But it’s so sad, because it illustrates the absurdity of war. Men who have absolutely no grievances with each other, killing each other, just because some fool politician ordered it.
Thank you for posting this. Merry Christmas and peace be with you and to everyone.

I look forward to this thread every year.
So do I.
I’m sitting here by the fire, most all have gone home, and I slowly sip dear whiskey, and I think how it must have been.
Huddled, cold and muddy in the trenches. Shellshocked and surrounded by the dead...
And then, from out of nowhere... Stille Nacht
Comes wafting over no man’s land.
And then it’s Christmas.
And men and boys in feldgrau and azure and khaki crossed a zone of death to make peace among the snow.
Amazing
