What's wild is the TOTAL COMBINED AMOUNT killed in each of those bloodiest battles, 58,785...is STILL less than the amount killed in a single day at Cannae.

Trench warfare. Nasty business with guys dug in on opposing sides and 'no mans land' in between. Grandfather lost a lung to mustard gas. Seems armaments exceeded our technical abilities and small skirmishes made for long hostilities or massive movements to make advances.
