In the 2010s the world got a lot larger to people, especially kids, due to social media and handheld phones. Kids now feel even less significant in this larger world.
In the 90s going across town was like the other side of the world to a kid as it was a different school district etc.

You forgot about Obama. Just because he legalized gay marriage doesn't mean he didn't give tax breaks to the ultra rich, continued to dismantle the middle east, and made record-breaking immigration arrests. If he wasn't black the GOP would love him.
