Biz friend in Houston told me today that three sets of grandparents in his small neighborhood lost granddaughters staying at Camp Mystic.

I didn’t realize just how bad things were be when I started this thread, but I was somewhat afraid because it made me think of the 2015 flood.

Camp Mystic has announced it will reopen next summer which has caused a great deal of consternation among the group of families that lost children.

That's about a tough a decision as any. Reopen to show the community that we can be strong, open up the camping season with shared memories of the lost children, memorials, etc, or just simply shut down forever. I wouldn't want to be making that decision.

I understand why some families will be upset over reopening the camp but what do they expect the owners to do? The owners have a right to make a living no matter how tragic the circumstances are for some.

Not the camp that flooded. It's a sister camp not impacted by the floods. Just FYI.

Right, it's the Cypress Lake unit. But that distinction doesn't carry much weight with the H27 group.

Agreed. It sounds like the reopening was handled poorly through their own fault or lawyers.

This is an interesting, maybe odd, conflict between the Camp Mystic owners and the camp association it belongs to:
The camp owners seem to be publicly saying what they believe are all the right things while the group that represents the camp's interests is saying something entirely different.

In August, many of the “Heaven’s 27” parents came together to devise and press for a package of state camp safety reforms. The legislation requires youth camps in Texas to build new cabins and move existing ones away from dangerous floodplains, among other provisions.
“Camp safety is now law in the great state of Texas,” Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas said at the signing ceremony in Austin, which was attended by dozens of parents.

The Eastland family said publicly that they supported the legislation, and sent letters to legislators affirming their backing, “especially the creation of detection and warning systems that would have saved lives on July 4.” Camp Mystic is a member of the Camping Association for Mutual Progress, a trade association that includes several camps that opposed the changes on the grounds that moving and rebuilding cabins would be prohibitively expensive.
