Everything is about symbolism over substance.
When I was in high school, if you wanted to take a girl to the prom, you simply asked her.
Now I'm told, the young men have to contrive elaborate and usually expensive schemes to woo the young girl for a date that will last one evening.
The pomp and circumstance is multiplied when the girl is older and planning a wedding. There is more concern with spending thousands on a wedding and honeymoon than wheter the marriage will last or not. It's ridiculous.

I"m mostly confused by the people of all ages and all manner of attire standing around watching people arrive at the prom.

If it wasn't for their parents enabling them it wouldn't be such a big deal. Prom moms are the equivalent of travel ball dads.
