Try not responding like you’re an expert when you don’t know anything then.
Sails are dropped and secured when the boat is anchored. Equivalent would be running the outboard while you’re anchored.

Those popped collars in a windstorm would be pretty dangerous. May have contributed to the tragedy.

The sails weren't up. The boat was anchored as was the nearby boat that rescued the survivors. The aluminum mast was broken by wind, maybe a tornado, and the resultant instability caused the boat to ??roll over and sink
