For the record, the PMP test is hard as shite. I've heard it compared to the bar exam

Check your sources brah.... I know several people that have it and a few instructors. It's not hard, its alot of question concerning things PM's don't practice on a daily basis. It's a test about a book, not about project managment/execution...

dilldopickleLSU sounds like he really knows his stuff citing all his degrees while discounting a highly valued certification someone else is interested in.

Isn't "PMP" only really looked highly upon in certain professions? For example it's looked highly upon in IT project management, but not so much in construction?

I used this online course. That way I could go at my own pace. I think you get 6 months to complete it.

I think IT professionals really like it. I work in electric utility and they are huge on it with their project managers. The problem is, most of them have no business being project managers. I worked as a contractor at one utility and they finally cleaned house on all of their PMP project managers.

I was working as a project controls specialist for one of them, and I asked him if he had all of his material and if we could allocate the 50K he had left somewheres else in the schedule. He responded "I don't have the authority to make that decision"......the knowledge of a PMP......

Yeah the PMP week long courses help (coworker recently did this), and they will pay for you to retake it if you do not pass.

I just read the book head first pmp, working in projects I was exposed to everything a great deal so it wasn't to bad. Just learn the terminology they use etc and you should be fine.

And not sure why people are hating on the PMP certification, it does help when your a independent contractor on the job market. Plus I know lots of educated people who don't know crap about their degree program, so let's not pretend it is limited to certain certifications.

I'm advising him, from an experienced professional, that if he does not have the experience for what he is seeking, that a PMP is a useless piece of paper, and from the employment questions/threads he's previously posted here, a PMP will be of no value to him. Otherwise he'll just fool an employer into hiring him, and piss everyone off and get fired.

Also don't lie about your experience you can be randomly selected for audit (I was) to prove your work history and exposure to different areas of project management.

Edit: So if what dilldopickleLSU says is true about your experience not really aligning to project management best not to pursue it.

Pretty sound advice when you put it that way.

So you're entire experience as a self-valued project manager, has been that PMPs know shite and you do because you have a MBA?

I can't speak for the vast majority of PMPs, but I can tell you in my young 7 year career, I've been responsible for than what you assume.

Obviously, your assumptions are quite foolish. You don't like PMPs, that's fine. But your tangent about me is quite honestly ridiculous and uncalled for.

Dickskin couldn't even tell you what field I'm in, much less what I do for a living. He's just mad and upset as always whenever I post something.

Oh my. I know you are in public sector work and want to get into private sector. Government work responsibilities are probably even more divided than direct hire utility work. Good luck with managing a project

I never said anything about my MBA being better than a PMP.

You were so mad you missed words in your post.

Honest question - do you think an MBA is more valuable to someone in project controls than a PMP is to someone in project management?

I don't think an MBA makes you better at your job. I think it makes you analyze and understand business models and why you make the decisions that you make.

It gives you upside later in your career because you have it.

PMP is just some bullshite certification that anyone can get and some people like. Nothing against it. I'll probably get one. I just don't think it makes anyone any better.

I didn't really answer the question, but yes an MBA is a lot better than a PMP regardless of title.
